Vacancy Description   

We are looking to recruit an apprentice chef for our popular, award winning restaurant in West Derby village. We need an apprentice commis chefs to help prepare and cook our varied menu that uses local fresh ingredients. You will gain great experience here and at The City of Liverpool College learning how to prepare restaurant standard meals.

We have a vacancy for an apprentice chef at our new Restaurant 51 Mill Lane, sister Restaurant of Almond Restaurant & Bar in West Derby village. 51 Mill Lane is a Small Plates & Tapas Restaurant. The main duties and responsibilities for our apprentice commis chef are:

  • Maintain health, hygiene and safety when storing and preparing food

  • Prepare basic vegetable dishes

  • Prepare basic meat and poultry dishes

  • Prepare & plate garnish

  • Prepare & plate desserts

  • Prepare basic fish dishes

  • Set up and close kitchen

  • Take directions and guidance from supervisors and managers.


Skills Required

  • Previous skills in food preparation much preferred
  • Able to work in a food preparation environment
  • Good knife skills

  • Able to keep calm and positive in a pressured environment


Qualifications Required   

Ideally a Level 1 catering/hospitality qualification and a minimum of Entry Level 3 in Maths and English but a real passion and interest in cooking is the key to this role.


Training to be Provided

New Apprenticeship Standard in Commis Chef - Level 2

One day per week at Duke Street site in Liverpool city centre plus Functional Skills in English and Maths if required.


Expected Duration

15 months.


Working Week

From 30 hours per week - shifts to be agreed

22 Placement / 8 College


RESTAURANT HOURS (opening hours):

Monday - Friday 4pm - 10pm (kitchen)

Saturday - Sunday 12pm - 10pm 

You will also be expected to attend college 1 day per week


Future Prospects   

The prospect of a full-time role is here on successful completion of your apprenticeship programme.


Reality Check

Able to access restaurant as shifts can finish around 10pm

Like all restaurants this role will become pressurised at times.

Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by the Government for non-levy paying employers. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution.
