Vacancy Description:

As a refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) engineer, your work could cover one of two broad areas:

  • Refrigeration – designing, installing and maintaining cooling systems in places like supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, and factories
  •  air-conditioning – installing and servicing the systems that control air quality, temperature and humidity inside offices, schools, leisure complexes and other modern buildings.

Whichever area you work in, your duties could include:

  •              surveying buildings where cooling systems are to be fitted
  •              discussing requirements with customers
  •              producing quotes for work
  •              designing and installing systems
  •              Running quality checks to make sure systems are working properly and safely
  •              diagnosing and fixing faults
  •              carrying out planned maintenance.

In this industry you would be at the forefront of protecting the environment. You would work with renewable energy technologies to improve energy efficiency, and special types of gas that don’t harm the ozone layer. You would also advise customers on how to reduce their energy consumption.

 

Skills Required:

  •              Demonstrate an interest in an engineering discipline.
  •              Ability to work efficiently and accurately.
  •              Highly motivated
  •              Aptitude for practical science or engineering skills

 

Personal Qualities required:

  • The ability to work as a team member and possess good interpersonal, communication and literacy skills.
  • To work with efficiency, accuracy and to be able to meet deadlines.
  • To be able to prioritise workload and work under own initiative.
  • High level of flexibility and dependability.
  • No pre-requisite experience required but a demonstrable interest in engineering through school or hobbies is an advantage

 

Qualifications Required:

Essential – GCSE Maths and English grades A-C OR 4-9; or Functional Skills Level 2 in these subjects

Desirable: Science related GCS, grade A-C

 

Training to be provided:

The apprenticeship programme involves attending College one day per week premises for (term-time) weekly tutorial sessions which will be assessed via workplace study and assessment over the duration of the apprenticeship programme.

 

Expected Duration:

24 months

 

Working Week:

37.5 hours per week

 

Future Prospects:

Successful completion of your apprentice may result in a full time position

 

Important Information:

The actual apprenticeship programme will not begin until September 18 so initially this role will require a trial period from April to August 18.

Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by the Government for non-levy paying employers. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution.
