We are the Academic Health Science Network for the North West Coast, covering Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and South Cumbria, with around 4.1 million residents. Our footprint includes 23 NHS providers, 19 CCGs, nine universities and a large number of life science industry partners.


Our role is to spread innovations which can improve the quality of health and care and reduce costs.


Our network connects expertise and knowledge across the NHS, other public sector, academia, businesses and the voluntary sector.


We work with our 14 fellow Academic Health Science Networks across England to achieve rapid uptake of innovations and initiatives to benefit the population locally and nationally.

We have offices in Daresbury, Liverpool and Preston and our teams work with partners to deliver transformation and improvement in healthcare. We also deliver support to small and medium sized businesses whose healthcare products have potential to achieve improvements. This is largely delivered through ERDF funding.

Our work is overseen by a Board of partners who help to shape our plans, provide insight into the needs of the region and act as our ambassadors for innovation.

Nationally, we are commissioned by NHS England, NHS Improvement and the Office for Life Sciences and we work closely with the AHSN Network to deliver national programmes of work to achieve rapid uptake of innovations proved to have an impact, across the country.


Job description:

An opportunity has arisen for a self- motivated and efficient apprentice to join the Innovation Agency.

To work as a member of the team and provide entry-level administrative and clerical assistance to support the operational business and communications functions of the NWC AHSN by undertaking the following duties:

  • A range of administrative tasks, such as photocopying, fax transmissions, processing mail, maintaining filing systems, archives and resource libraries and updating information. 

  • Learn to apply Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word and Excel. 

  • Answer the telephone and liaise with staff, clients and other agencies to assist in the delivery of services. 

  • Produce simple correspondence and reports from written documents. 

  • Input and retrieve data from internal computer systems. 

  • Liaise with staff, clients, and other agencies, to assist in the delivery of services.

  • Learn to minute, produce and distribute accurate records of selected meetings.

  • Learn to order and maintain stocks of relevant stationery and forms 

  • Assist with maintaining manual and computerised systems including inputting data, keeping records, statistics, confidential and general filing systems as instructed. 

  • Assist in corporate communications and events management, helping to organise meetings and events as instructed, ensuring that all necessary arrangements are in place, under the direction of the Communications team.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times

    Any other duties not listed above

  • To note that frequent VDU usage will be required


Qualifications Required:

  • GCSE’s grades A-C or 4-9 in English and Maths are desirable plus an IT qualification
  • Level 2 qualification in Business Administration will be a distinct advantage

Training to be Provided:

Business Administration Level 2 or 3

To undertake a Business Administration Level 2/3 Apprenticeship and be supported in in the workplace to achieve competencies


Working Week:

Monday- Friday (37.5 hours per week)

Time will be given for ‘off-the-job training’ for the Business Administration course  


Expected Duration: 

18 Months from start of course


Future Prospects:

Possible permanent position within the company


Important Information:

Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by the Government for non-levy paying employers. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution.
