We are a small family run hotel and restaurant situated in the busy heart of Liverpool.

Once a private gentleman’s club, this historic building is now the home to the Racquet Club Hotel & Ziba Restaurant – open to all.


Vacancy Description:

We have a vacancy for an apprentice chef at independent boutique hotel. We use locally sourced, fresh ingredients and the main duties and responsibilities for our apprentice commis chef are:

  •          Maintain health, hygiene and safety when storing and preparing food
  •          Prepare basic vegetable dishes
  •          Prepare basic meat and poultry dishes
  •          Prepare pasta dishes
  •          Prepare basic soups
  •          Prepare basic fish dishes
  •          Prepare different desserts
  •          Set up and close kitchen
  •          Take directions and guidance from supervisors and managers.
  •          Help set up and close down the kitchens


Skills Required:

  • Previous skills in food preparation  - Preferred
  • Able to work in a food preparation environment

  • Willing to learn (in work and College)

Able to keep calm and positive in a pressured environment


Qualifications Required:

Ideally a Level 1 catering/hospitality qualification and a minimum of Entry Level 3 in Maths and English but a real passion and interest in cooking is the key to this role.


Training to be provided:

Commis Chef Apprentice Standard Level 2 – one day per week at Duke Street site in Liverpool city centre plus Functional Skills in English and Maths if required.


Expected Duration:

15 months


Working Week:

Minimum 30 hours per week

You will also be expected to attend college 1 day per week


Future Prospects:

The prospect of a full-time role is here on successful completion of your apprenticeship programme


Reality Check:

Working in an intimate kitchen in close proximity with other chefs, working under pressure, and long days standing.


Important Information:

Work hours can be as late and 10pm some days and can start as early as 8am if required.

You will be required to work weekends as the rota is 5 days out of 7 per week 


Other Important Information:

Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by the Government for non-levy paying employers. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution.
