What to expect from the course

The course is designed for people working in a barber’s at least two days a week who want to have a recognised qualification which may lead to further job opportunities in the barbering industry. Applicants must have a mature attitude and be able to self study.

You will complete units in:

• Working in the hair industry.
• Follow health and safety practice in the salon
• Client consultation for hair services.
• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
• Promote products and services to clients in a salon
• Cut men’s hair
• Cut facial hair
• Colour and lighten hair
• Styling men’s hair
• Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
• Scalp massage

It will be necessary for you at times to provide your own models. In addition, you will need to compile a portfolio of evidence. The portfolio supports your practical expertise and shows that you understand the theoretical concepts behind the practical tasks that you are able to carry out. You will also have the opportunity to gather evidence for your portfolio from your work days in the salon.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways

Once you successfully complete your course you may be able to progress to the next level, following a satisfactory interview with a Tutor. If you’ve finished your Level 3 course you will be offered advice and guidance from our Careers Advisors on how to apply for a place at University through UCAS, or how to apply for a job or an Apprenticeship.

Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 courses generally last for one year.

Entry Requirements

The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry onto the course.

A minimum of 3 GCSEs grade 3 (previously D) or above including Maths and English language OR a minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 or above including Maths and English Language and relevant subject qualification OR a minimum of a Level 1 course in your chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at Level 1.

An enthusiasm and passion to succeed and develop yourself with great attendance will be vital to you achieving success on this course.

Fees

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19-23 and don’t already hold a qualification equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, and you need to study at Entry or Level 1 to progress to Level 2, you won't have to pay any fees for this course.
