What to expect from the course
- The one-year Higher National Diploma Top-up in Computing is designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in intelligent systems and builds on students; previous study at level 4. The qualification can enhance the career prospects of those who undertake it and, on completion, students may wish to progress to the one-year BSc (Hons) Computing (Top-Up) course to complete their degree.
The course covers the Intelligent Systems pathway and equips students with a solid understanding of the skills and knowledge to be successful in the computing industry. Strong links to business and the computing sector will facilitate industry-related briefs and real scenarios that provide an opportunity for students to acquire professional work ethics, time planning skills and working within a team.

How will I be taught?
Knowledge and understanding will be acquired through the following range of approaches to module delivery:
Work related and work-based learning
Mixed modes of delivery
Tutor-led learning (lectures, with student interaction/discussion, class exercises and group work, as appropriate to the topic)
Tutor-led workshops (practical sessions with student interaction)
Self-managed learning/research (outside timetabled sessions)
IT and software available on campus as learning tools
Self-directed learning using programming material via the VLE
Mentoring sessions (one-to-one with the tutor)
Learning logs (in paper or electronic form, e.g. blogs)
Supported learning and resources available via the LRC
How will I be assessed?
The programme is assessed through submission of written reports, work-based projects, creation of design documents, working logbooks and presentations with assessor questioning.
Formative feedback will support student progression in both written work and technical outcomes. Self and peer assessment in critique situations will be an essential element of all projects and the feedback from these will enhance student achievement and progression.
Summative assessment is given where students are provided with the assignment grades contributing towards the overall unit grade.
Who is the course intended for?
This course is aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. It is designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in intelligent systems. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the computing sector it will give students the experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare them for further study or training.
Additional Costs
Students may be required to purchase their own materials for any specialist projects they undertake as part of the course.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free
When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.
Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite
The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.
Career pathways
- Students who successfully complete this qualification may continue their studies at The City of Liverpool College University Centre and progress on to the level 6 BSc (Hons) Computing (Top-up) course.
Alternatively, graduates may wish to progress directly into employment in their chosen career or study at another higher education provider.

Entry Requirements
• Completed HNC in Computing or equivalent Level 4 certificate of higher education
• Related work experience
Applicants should hold a total UCAS Tariff points score from relevant qualifications of at least 96 points.
Fees
This course is only available to learners aged 18 and over. Fees are payable by all students unless sponsored by an employer, but you may qualify for a student loan through Student Finance England towards the cost of your course and living costs. Fee for25/26 is 6700.00
In future years we anticipate increasing this fee in line with the annual inflation level (capped at RPI All Items Excluding Mortgage Interest (RPIX)).
