Course Details

  • The intent of this study programme is to prepare you for progression to the next level of study, or into employment in your chosen trade. By obtaining the required skills and knowledge you will not only be achieving a Diploma Level 2 qualification but will also greatly improve your chances of finding a career as a painting and decorating operative within the Construction industry.
  • Painting and decorating is a real craft that requires you to be dedicated and patient, whilst having a good work ethic to help meet the physical challenges. You will experience working with a wide range of materials to ensure you cover all aspects of the craft , these include preparing backgrounds and substrates, applying paint by roller and brush, installing a range of coverings to ceilings and walls and carry out specialist finishes.
  • If you are 16-18 and don't have a grade 4 in English or maths, you will study this alongside your main qualification. English and maths are also available at the College for adult learners to support you in your journey. You will need to make progress by improving upon the level you have previously achieved – either at school or college. When commencing your course, your English and maths skills will be assessed, to ensure that you are working at the correct level, and that we can offer the right level of support for you to achieve in these subject areas.
  • If you are 16-18 and have completed a L1 P&D qualification or you are an adult with no prior experience and are not employed, then this course might just be what you are looking for!

What to expect from the course

This programme will help you develop key skills to improve your opportunities of gaining employment. Employers demand that all potential employees can:
• Use maths skills to assist work practices
• Use English skills to communicate; both in writing and orally, with colleagues and customers
• Attend regularly and arrive on time
• Work safely at all times
• Display excellent practical skills and good trade knowledge
• Work independently or as part of a team
• Find solutions to problems

What will the programme include?
• English and maths sessions – improve your current level, working towards a GCSE qualification at Level 4, or above
• Practical workshop sessions – gain the necessary skills required to earn money and start your career
• Theory sessions – be able to link theory with precision to the practical work you have completed
Improve your Health and Safety knowledge and complete an exam. This exam will allow you to take a CSCS test.
Learn about construction principles and sustainability.
• Work related activities – ensure you can follow instructions and complete an employer challenge
• Industry guest speakers – listen to what the experts say, ask questions, and discover whether this is the career is for you
• Site visits – tour a live site to observe projects in the local area and observe site expectations for safety.
• Work experience – put your learning, practical training and development into practice on a live site.
• Tutorial sessions – designed to develop you as an individual and plan your career progression
• Skills competitions – In-house, regional, and even national competitions are all on offer for you to showcase your skills, can you win?

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways

On successful completion you may be able to progress into the industry or embark on apprenticeship Standard in Painting and Decorating (if employed as a painter & decorator)

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free.
