What to expect from the course

The Catering and Hospitality sector is without doubt one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, with a vast amount of employment opportunities.

The need for skilled chefs increases annually and having a Level 3 Professional Chefs Diploma will be the benchmark for most employers. Such qualified chefs are expected to perform at the highest level consistently in an often busy and challenging kitchen environment.

The ability to work at this level requires commitment, dedication and a passion to produce dish items to a high standard.
This requires enthusiasm, high energy, methodical working and organisational skills and the ability to take responsibility when needed.

Advanced Professional Chef students will gain work experience with a college approved employer. You will be learning in our award-winning Academy Restaurant,w here you will produce dishes of high-end cuisine for our paying customers. This gives you a real insight into how what you are doing in college supports the needs of local industry. Many of our students have gone into local industry and have won accolades to be proud of.

The college also offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities for you to develop your skills further these will be guest chef nights where you will get the opportunity to work alongside Michelin starred chefs producing some amazing tasting food, we have a visitor economy week were top chefs from the city come in and give master classes; butchery demonstration from our meat supplier, molecular gastronomy from our lecturers or you will visit some of the hotels in the area to see what they have to offer you. We have exciting competitions that you can be part of, these will be internal and external national competitions, many of our students have gone on to win in heats of competitions such as ‘North West Young Chef of the Year’ some have gone on to appear on ‘Great British Menu’ representing the North West. So as you can see this is not just a career choice it’s a life skill that will stick with you forever and you will develop to be the best chef and pastry chef in the industry.

Academy Bakery

The Academy Bakery is located on the Duke Street campus, producing a range of first class baked goods daily. These include artisan breads, patisserie and biscuits, as well as special occasion/novelty cakes by award-winning master-bakers. Students are offered a range of discounts throughout the year.

Academy Hair and Beauty Salons

Duke Street is also home to The Academy Hair and Beauty salons. They offer generous student discounts on a wide range of hair and beauty treatments, at a fraction of high-street prices. These include styling, cutting, perming, highlights, facials, manicures, electrolysis and traditional and homeopathic massage.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways

Progression opportunities on successful completion of the course would be Higher Education study at Management Level 4 and Level 5 HNC/HND

Career opportunities for Advanced Professional Chefs is unlimited, whether it be in Hotel and Restaurants, Contract Catering, Welfare Catering, Event Catering to name a few.

Entry Requirements

The following is a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry onto the course.

A minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4 (previously C) or above including Maths and English Language OR a minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Maths and English Language and relevant subject qualification OR a minimum of Level 2 course in your chosen subject at merit or above and English Language and Maths at Level 2.

An enthusiasm and passion to succeed and develop yourself with great attendance will be vital to you achieving success on this course.

Fees

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged 19 or over you may be entitled to a fee waiver for your course or you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course. In future years this fee may be subject to change.

Please note this is a two year programme that consists of two courses. Your fee status may change from one year to the next depending on age and circumstance at the start of the next course e.g. if you turn 19 before progressing to the next level, you may be required to pay fees as outlined above.
