What to expect from the course
- This one-year professional course covers all aspects of the technical and production practices within two optional pathways of Production and Theatre Arts.
At a high level, you will explore and develop your own professional skills and knowledge within Theatre . You will have a flexible timetable where you will experience classroom teaching alongside real live professional placements with industry-leading companies within the City Region. Your experiences across the course will feel much like an apprenticeship, where you will gain the relevant practical skills and knowledge to complete the course in a real-life work placement. You will be allocated a tutor who will work with you throughout the course to gathering evidence towards obtaining the qualification.
Within Production Arts you will be working with real Theatres in Liverpool you will explore a range of production arts practices including lighting design, sound design, multimedia and video/projection work, stage management, set design, scenic construction and prop making.
Module and units:
Unit 1 - Establishing Principles of Technical and Production Practice
This unit equips you for the workplace by exposing you to the operational and management structures inherent within the creative industries. You will gain an appreciation of the communication protocols, etiquettes and interdependencies of departments in order to attain a firm understanding of the operational processes that lead towards a performance event. You will consider a range of technical and production roles and determine your associated individual responsibilities whilst acknowledging how you function within a wider professional working environment.
Unit 2 - Applied Professional Practice
This unit further develops and refines your professional skill levels by placing you directly within a professional environment and exposing you to the realities of the workplace. You will have the opportunity of applying the technical and production skills acquired from your previous unit and testing them out in a professional context. This unit will also see you cultivate your networking skills and start building a database of contacts as you engage with employers.
Unit 3 - Professional Development Project
This unit provides you with an opportunity to take control of your own professional development by independently initiating, researching, establishing and completing a production project. You will explore a self-defined area of practice from which you will initially create a proposal to outline your motivations and methodologies. The precise content of the proposal will be dependent upon the specialist skills developed by you. You will then go on to realise a substantial project and undertake responsibility for a key production role.
This qualification is suitable for adult learners who want a career in either Media Production of Film and TV or Production Arts and Theatre and do not want to go to University. You must be over 18 to apply for the course and all applicants will have an interview with the College and the allocated industry companies.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free
When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.
Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite
The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.
Career pathways
- Learners completing the UAL Level 4 Professional Diploma in Technical and Production Practice for the Creative Industries will progress into: Higher Education The qualification will support learners to develop a portfolio of work enabling them to progress to higher education courses. – This course provides you with an opportunity to build a portfolio of work and does not provide you with UCAS points.

Fees
If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged between 19-23 and don’t have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent), you won't have to pay any fees for this course.
24 years old or over or 19-23 and have 2 A-Levels (or equivalent) at the start of the course? Fees are payable, but you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course.
