Course Details

  • Autism presents in many ways, and the support needs of each individual are unique. This course will teach you about a range of therapeutic interventions and support available to autistic individuals and their families.
  • In addition, you will learn about conditions that commonly co-occur with autism and the treatment options available. You will cover the roles and responsibilities relating to safeguarding, and the ways you can assist autistic individuals to lead fulfilling lives.

What to expect from the course

This course is made up of five units:
• Autism in context
• Positive behavioural support for autistic individuals
• Support and management of transitions for autistic individuals

More than 1 in every 100 people in the UK have an autism diagnosis. The Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Autism is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of autism, and the challenges and strengths that autistic people may relate to. You will learn about characteristics, diagnosis and how understanding and different theories surrounding autism have developed over time. Within this qualification, and to accurately discuss the history of autism, a range of terminology is referred to, including outdated terms such as Asperger Syndrome.

This course is particularly suited for a career in learning mentorship, youth work or Special Educational Needs teaching assistants.

Academy Restaurant

Duke Street campus is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant. Often referred to by it’s customers as Liverpool’s hidden gem, the restaurant serves top class cuisine, at highly competitive prices. Food is expertly prepared by professional chef/tutors and young chefs in training and offers students a range of discounts at different times of the year.

Microsoft Office 365 - Free

When you become a student of the College you’ll receive full access to Microsoft Office 365. This allows you to install the software on your own computer and other devices at home, completely free of charge.

Onsite Sports Facilities/Fitness Suite

The college has excellent sports and fitness facilities at its Roscoe Street campus. Students pay a one-off membership fee for all year round usage of weekly supervised gym sessions, as well as access to a number of sporting clubs and events.


Career pathways

On successful completion of this course the learner will have achieved an NCFE Level 3 qualification, the 8-week course gives the learner the chance to develop their knowledge and understanding of Autism, and how to support those who have been diagnosed as autistic.

Entry Requirements

These courses are delivered across the year and can be started once your enrolment is processed, no need to wait until the next intake.

To achieve this course learners should have at least a grade C or 4 in English, good IT skills, access to a PC or laptop and ability to organise their own learning time.

Learners will be expected to meet key deadlines for submission of assessments, join Teams sessions or if preferred attend the college for workshops to support their learning.

If you are 16-18 years old at the start of your course, studying at The City of Liverpool College is free. If you are aged 19 or over you may be entitled to a fee waiver for your course or you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course.
